Serena's Coaching Violation Splitscreen

Serena Williams Coaching Code Violation US Open 2018

Her coach is telling her to push forward.

She argues she wasn't being coached, yet the next 3 points she pushes forward and wins those points.

She had been staying back the entire match, before the coaching.

Correction - That description was from the OP but after checking it just now from the source it seems it doesn't look to me like she pushed forward more than usual on all 3 of the next receives.

do you know if anyone has compiled the percentages of offences getting penalised as opposed to the absolute numbers? Harder to do I guess.

Does it matter?

As I understand it Serena is claiming sexism based on her perception that women are more likely to get penalised for any given offence. The table above shows that men get penalised more overall, but if men also commit more offences it could still be consistent with Serena’s view. I have no idea if that is the case, but I think it is ridiculous that there has been so much discussion in the mainstream media without any basis in the actual statistics. The table above is actually the first I have come across (not that I have been actively searching).

OK, we can stop at this first sentence.  Serena is appealing to a standard of fairness that does not exist, therefore her argument is vapid.

Did she receive coaching?  Yes.  Is it a violation of the rules to which she agreed?  Yes.  Therefore it doesn't matter what her sex organs are or how many men received the warning, the warning was justified.

Did she break her racket?  Yes.  Is it a violation of the rules to which she agreed?  Yes.  Therefore it doesn't matter what her sex organs are or how many men were docked a point, the penalty was justifed.

Did she engage in verbal abuse?  Yes.  Is it a violation of the rules to which she agreed?  Yes.  Therefore it doesn't matter what her sex organs are or how many men have been penalized,  the penalty was justifed.

Men's and Women's Tennis are two seperate sports.  It doesn't matter one iota what happens on the men's side.  This bullshit argument she is making is nothing more than a red herring to mask her absurd behavior.  The best thing the Tennis organization can do is dismiss it as such.

I don’t know much about tennis, but from what I understand, the warnings and penalties were absolutely in line with the rules, however the coaching is often overlooked by judges who are given discretion to keep the game flowing. Not everyone would agree that judges should be more lenient towards male players (assuming that they are) even though we are dealing with separate tournaments. It is very possible that she is bringing in sexism to distract from her poor behaviour, but most of that discussion is just a waste of time unless arguments are backed up by statistics.

No but her husband seems to think it's possible....I don't agree that it's even possible because most of the offenses are judgement calls & the coaching violation requires footage of the coaches. The husband is co-founder of Reddit so has a lot of $$.

I think a further issues is with the discretion given to the judges to overlook offences in order to keep the game flowing. In matches where the number of offences is high, the judge might decide to overlook a slightly higher proportion of them just to keep things moving. If men commit more offences in general they might get penalised at a lower rate for this reason.
