Video games suck so bad anymore. It's either linear, cinematic "experience" or bland open world game that also has to be a cinematic "experience" but with more walking between cutscenes.

Well, the things I get most excited for are improvements to AI and environmental interactivity. Because of their interactive nature, the best way to take advantage of the medium is by increasing the player's ability to live in those worlds in a believable way, effectively creating tiny simulations. Unfortunately, the big push for the last few generations seems to be creating prettier graphics and more fantastic setpieces, while our ability to interact with the game world has either stagnated or gotten more limited.

I always like to bring up Warren Spector's idea of a One City Block RPG as my ideal video game. It would be many, many times smaller than your average Elder Scrolls map, but the experiences you could have within this small area are about a thousand times more vivid and immersive than your average open-world interaction. To me, that is what video games are all about, not having a "cinematic experience".

Yup, that's why Minecraft is so popular.  Nobody cares about the blocky graphics as long as there's shit to do.
