I think you meant to say they were arming themselves in preparation for the coming attempt to ethnically cleanse all the Jews from Israel. It was an open secret that as soon as the British left the Jews would be fair game for the Islamist who wanted to "purify" the "Muslim lands".
It was this sort of preparation and forethought that helped lead to the defeat of the Jew hating Arabs in 1948. They came for the Jews thinking they would be easy prey and instead found well armed bad asses ready to chew bubble gum and kick ass; and they were all out of gum.

It was always the Zionist plan to ethnically cleanse Palestine. The only debate among those genocidal scumbags was whether to take it all or leave some for the Arabs. The debate continues to this day.
