Interesting. I'm actually applying that thought process to types of bosses as well.

What if your customer is all four of those types?

I would strongly recommend you look into a book called Never Split The Difference by former lead FBI hostage negotiater Chris Voss. It covers how to deal with bosses more than you might normally need to in sales.

Usually if you are having a mix of all 4 types you are dealing with someone manipulative. The mistake there being that you either came into a position or allowed yourself to get into a position where the other party feels in control and that you can be manipulated without repercussions. Your best bet here is to assess what you want to achieve and then make yourself valuable, if they recognize your value you have bargaining power if they don't you are in a more difficult position.

Very astute. He is indeed. He likes to use incrementalism. He doesn't like face to face meetings. He likes to make negotiations on the phone when I am in the middle of an urgent workload. My value is clear as I manage his business. Without me he will be in a difficult position while he finds a replacement, as he has no suitable candidates with my skill working for him. In a couple of weeks I will no longer need to accept his money.

I think I will renegotiate under no uncertain terms. if he doesn't see it my way I will wish him the best and take a nice vacation between jobs.

Sounds like you have bargaining chips but he doesnt see them, might want to make it more obvious and turn up the stakes in a very obvious way. Generally people buy out of things not into them as many are led to believe, if you can get him to realize the pain he is either feeling or is about to feel and get him to admit to that pain then you are very well positioned to get what you want.

Good luck and happy to hear how it goes
