More "man-made" SARS-CoV-2 lab-leak malarky

In contrary to conspiracy theorists there is no proof! There is a lack of information, which many use to speculate for their more or less deluded or prjudiced audiences.

This of course has nothing to do with being skeptical or "thinking for oneself".

This guy's garbage. He asserts that COVID comes from natural origin, and his all he can do is refute a Daily Mail article. Most of the video is him telling us we don't know for sure whether or not some of these stories are real, or if China is covering something up. Yeah, no shit buddy, that's basically the point of a cover up. It's very unscientific to form an assumption on bias, and that's all this guy is doing. Also, the discredit to Dr. Brett Weinstein at the end is pathetic.

lol you really don't get that you are one of those falling for the sesationalist propaganda from the coinspiracy theorists, like weinstein, who see shit where there is no shit (yet?) to see.

Hillarious if you ask me.

"It's very unscientific to form an assumption on bias, and that's all this guy is doing."

He is doing the opposite, actually, please explain.

Potholer can't really say anything about anything unless theres a peer reviewed paper written on it.

If theres a cover up it just might be that the answers wont be found on a scientific paper. There are always ways to cover your tracks.

Oh, now please endulge us:

What is there other than a (valid) suspicion?

How do you propose one should go about finding and evaluating evidence for the scientific part this?

Who other than the respective specialists in the field would be competent in evaluating this?

Why should I indulge you on something that I never claimed of knowing better?

I said Potholer cannot entertain ideas or speculate, at least not publicly. He can only read what the papers say.

He's a very strict "stick with what is known".  So the video really equates to "I don't know". Though he did shoot down some of the conspiracy claims.

Personally, I start from this: Why WOULDN'T China be interested in gain of function research?

I'm sure the US is doing it and every big player.

IF it's happening, I'm sure there are no public peer-reviewed papers on it and won't be for a long time.

You do understand that investigations are ongoing? You barged in on the high horse, critizising people for sticking with what is known as if you knew better, however, as expected you don't.

I think your defensiveness is getting the best of you. Never claimed such things. Ease off on the "debunk mode".

My first reply reply was to Kingofcroydonia explaining how Potholer does things. There nothing wrong how he does his thing, and it definetly is needed in this day and age. It's a very conservative and non speculative and thats fine.

I apologise, your comment just sounded like the "look at my alternative scientist" afficionados, and they actually do get me going as they have exactly that: NOT a valid alternative.

No problem.

I don't dismiss "alternative science" and actually think its a good thing but of course needs to be fact checked to see if theres any validity to it.

You remember Suspicous observers vs potholer some years back. Thats the kind of thing I'd like to see more of. SO is always looking at the newest studies and sometimes draws some big claims from them, where as Potholer would be the conservative side that balances the convo.

I think you give SO too much credit. He made huuuuuuuuge claims of stuff he would reveal in his book. In the end nothing came of it, of course. Rather than only writing a book he should have published his hypotheses via the appropriate channels for peer review (i.e. fact checking) he didn't because he wanted to publish for the fanboys (revenue), not for science and knew his "theories" would be dismissed by real experts.

Like others he understands the scientific process very well (he published before on another topic after all) but deliberately took himself out of the review process for this one. Taking people like him seriously onj this topic is not something I would recommend.

I skipped through their discuission video, as I am by no means an expert most of it went over my head of course, in the end both potholer's and SO's afficionados felt their "side" won, karenoid even dared to say potholer got his arse handed to him, lol.

"I am by no means an expert"

This is where I start also. all I can do is ask some other expert to see what he thinks. I still can't dismiss SO out of hand because he relies on climate science papers. He just goes one step further a lot of times and makes his own conclusions. It's almost impossible for a layman to decern if theres anything to it.

I know we all have our favorites but it doesn't hurt to take a peak out side of your own  "bubble" and view different options. Science is after all a work in progress and dissmissal out of "not in my camp" is...well not a very scientific and objective approach. You can of course use common sense what is plausible and not go out with every crack pot idea. Just be sure it not out of hubris.

Cherry picking form research papers because it fits one's bias doesn't make one a competent researcher, especially when those "findings" then are exclusively published in a blog or book and not put up for scrutiny by peers.

As I said, I can't say if he is onto something or grasping at straws.

I leave the option open either way.
