Shia militia groups in Iraq, Syria, Afganistan & Lebanon operate under the command of the Quds Force - a special unit of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard (IRGC). The Quds Force focuses on external operations, often covert.
The Quds Force is led by Major General Qasem Soleimani and his deputy Hossein Hamadani. It answers directly to the Iranian Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Khomeini. Little is known about the Quds Force.
Iranian-led Shia militia have been around since 1982 when Hezbollah was formed to resist Israel's occupation of Southern Lebanon. Hezbollah have successfully defended Lebanon from Israel and ISIS since 2000, even facing a full-scale Israeli invasion in 2006 and defeating them handily.
Iraqi Shia militia have fought against US-led occupation; alongside US-led forces against ISIS; alongside Russian & Syrian forces in Syria against al Qaeda and ISIS.
