at 7.30 he says that the more common life is in the universe the more likely the filter is in front of us...shouldnt that be behind us? the filter theory is useless otherwise..

i think you forgot what the video is about. its essentially what stops a society from acheiving type III civilization.(flying saucers from other solar systems and shit)

so if you look around and find life all around on different planets and yet none of them are a type III civ, well the filter is front of you. think about the billions of other planets that are billions of years older where life has had more time to develop and yet no alien visitors.

ah so hes talking about the type 3 civilisation being ahead of us....meh..its just that before that part he said that if we found the ruins of an old civilisation in our own solar system then the wall /filter is ahead of us but that would mean that some civilisation made it to inter solar level, how far does the filter have to go before this filter theory is just non sense?

he's talking about all sorts of stuff

so at first. he's talking about how the filter could be behind us since we dont see anything and we are the first to make it this far.

after thats its about it infront of us. if we found life, or ruins it would be infront of us because of the amount of time it would have had to travel the stars and didnt.

the idea is just a counter argument to the fermi paradox. the filter would primarly be something that stops a society from reaching this far(behind). or something that stops the society from populating other planets/colonization(infront).

We generally assume that a more advanced civilization means bigger and more complicated.

Yet we ignore that our civilization, which is type 0 according to our own definition, is currently about to embark on a path towards realising concepts like sustainability, environment safeguarding and living within our means on a planet whose population of humans is exploding at the cost of all other forms of life.

And while looking out into space for traces of other civilisations, we don't factor this into our search.

We are about to start editing our own genes, and are already reverse engineering ourselves to live better lives at smaller costs to our surroundings.

What's the type III of that?

Would it not be invisible?

Devoid of war, ruins or carbon footprints.

Why would we expect to find anyone out there if we're already on this path.
