This shit's always annoyed me, gotta say it's pretty entertaining.  Been 6 years off and on in Sweden with the girlfriend and they solved the issue by having people put a coin in to get a cart, and when they return the cart, it pops the coin out.  I've never seen a cart left in the parking lot there.  Back here in the US it's always the same.  Fuck you buddy!  It's my right!  It's not my problem!

Agreed. It's said that the ability to return a shopping cart is one of the defining characteristics of civility ie you don't have to do it, but you should. And I always do. But the other day when I encountered one of these 1$ coin (Canadian loonie) contraptions, I couldn't help but rebel, a little. Some folks were lining up, in the freezing cold, further ahead to wait to pay for their cart (there were plenty) but I intercepted a dude who had just finished loading up his car and slipped him a loonie. He looked confused for a second as he held the coin til I said 'here you go bud, for the cart.. let me save you a trip'. He turned over the cart and the suckers still lining up tried to hide how impressed they were, lols.

I never knew it different in belgium, all carts work on coins for as far back as i remember, and there is also no line every parking lot street comes out on a cart parking dome, with 3 or 4 rows each more carts then parking spaces, i have seen ppl steal carts apparently they are worth scrap metal :) but no carts lying around, and buying ppl´s cart is normal here even if there is no line
