F-35 performance so far has been checkered at best despite more than a trillion USD being spent on the program.

Probably not accurate as the USAF and other operators of the F-35 only disclose grounding of their aircraft when absolutely necessary. Nothing in the news about that, unless I missed it. Despite the 'checkered' performance there is no shortage of countries placing orders as the tech is still light years ahead of anything the chinese or russians can put in the air.

no he doesn't, he refutes this simplistic narrative by describing what they've been doing this century
He generally says how fast they're catching up with all the resources being dumped into it (a fraction of what the west spends btw....didn't you say they're corrupt too?)
The thing he's most critical about is pilot training but but he says this is something they're addressing already & the lack of combat experience is something we should be happy about. This is outside the scope of "all of chinese military aircraft" though so no social credit points for you there.

If anything the invasion of Ukraine has shown the world is that russian aircraft (along with all of their other military equipment) is absolute shite.
