Hi Everybody!

I want to keep this short so:

NEW FEATURE!

"Popular Videos" section, displays videos with 8-14 votes (sorted by largest number of votes to smallest).

Help sort through the good and the bad fellow Spikers!

This had been on my to do list for a long time now. Hope you all enjoy.

PS: To encourage people to sign in, only those logged in will be able to see the link (along the top next to "My Posts")

Well, you all have took advantage of this new section in a major way. There are about 3 pages of videos on the front page that weren't there last night. I went through and fixed all the broken ones I could, I'm just repairing the tags now.

So officially I can't keep up with the videos now. While it does make a lot of new content go to the front page, I think it will also make it a lot more difficult for comments to be had or even be seen. Maybe set the minimum votes to the front page to 20 or something now that it's easier to see the popular ones? At least make it so that i'm not 7 pages behind because I had to work.

I've been noticing that as well and I actually postponed a few of my uploads. It seems to me we're burning through a bunch of old videos and it does indeed produce an onslaught of videos to the front page. I would bet after a few more days they'll slow back down to their normal trickle so there will be time for discussion on videos again.

The key is to watch the top 5. If they haven't changed in a while, it obviously means no recent content has been uploaded and deemed good enough by votes.

On the other side of the coin, it can be very frustrating seeing the same top 5 last for 4-5 days most likely because people haven't been actively voting to sort it out. I think CritikalMind has set a top 5 video to drop its place after a week regardless, but it should never get to that stage.

Well it's quite a frustrating line to draw. Half of the members here are those that vote and tag well. The other half don't do either and then whinge that articles are "getting shit".

Well guess what people!? Voting input is crucial to whether you see or don't see good shit and no one else is going to do it for you!

So if we had the non-voting cockfags voting, we'd have much more stability for setting the math that ensures the front page is full of many things people want to click on and refreshes in content at a reasonable pace.

We're having productive discussions about improving voting and thus obviously improving content. It's just a bit ridiculous that we need to now consider bringing in incentives for votes because apparently being easily entertained isn't enough.

Not only that but we're getting it for fucking free. I had a discussion not too long ago with someone about voting and they wanted prizes and shit to make them vote. Really?? People need to have a steak put in front of them on a fishing line before they'll vote? In my opinion let those fuckers toss and turn: SpikedNation.com offers us free entertainment with no pop-up ads or forced interaction. If someone doesn't want to vote that's fine but they will be mocked for it.

Mama didn't raise no fool. Of course it was on SpikedNation.com. The last in-depth discussion I had with someone in real life was weather or not Inquisitor's Flail doubled types of damage by creatures. I was 2-1 at an Innistrad sealed and I had it strapped to a Charmbreaker Devils and every single turn I was returning Rebuke to my hand every single turn which meant that he had to attack with two creatures, but all I was sitting on was the Devils.

He dropped a Voiceless Spirit and I stupidly decided to attack him with my strapped Devils. He blocked and the question was whether or not my Devils would actually deal any damage to his Spirit. Unfortunately it worked out in his favor and his creature did 2 point of first strike damage to my Devils which was then doubled which meant it did 4 points of first strike damage to my creature and his was left untouched. I Angel of the Flight Alabaster and it was scoop for me.

I generally don't vote unless I really like something or really dislike something. There does need to be some kind of reward for voting like back on spiked humor. OBVIOUSLY not prizes, but maybe some kind of pip system like on forums and things like that. It's pretty meaningless yes, but people will vote more if there is some kind of reward.

well I just sent like 5 dead videos to the front page due to the fact that youtube removed them for whatever reason. There should be a report dead vid button or something. Or should I mark as spam or inappropriate?

The front page has been a beast of a thousand faces over the last week, I totally expected it tho. Fortunately, it's given me the chance to find alternate youtube links for broken videos, fix some tags, add some descriptions, and even uncover a few spam/viral comments from spambots.

off topic / suggestions:

1. put a mini "uploader 's avatar" icon inbetween the "watched" "commented" and "rating" icons of the thumbnail for videos

2. give people who don't vote a mini dildo icon, so we can all down vote their comments and make fun of their tiny dildos

3. make the videos mouseover a preview of the video (w00t w00t spankwire)

Your first suggestion doesn't seem to be necessary. Does it matter if I upload a video vs. Exploder or Gelfing Power? I feel that there are users who are petty enough to intentionally overlook a video if they have some gripe with a particular uploader.

yeah... i'm on the fence about the avatar showing. but, i've also realized, there's a lot of videos i don't even bother clicking 'cause i'm just not interested. doubt i'd shun an upload purely due to the avatar showing. but that's just me... i think all of us who take the time to upload videos have some winners as well as some stinkers.

I don't think we'd be able to do the mouse over previews unless the video was hosted on our own servers. If Youtube doesn't have the feature, none of the YouTube videos will have them.

I like the new feature but I think something should be done to slow the flooding of the front-page. Maybe up the votes needed for the popular video section to ~11-12 or increase the votes needed to get to the front page (~20).

8 votes is too low to get a "mini" promotion - almost every new video gets 8 votes. If the goal is to weed out the bad videos maybe another system is needed. For example, if a video gets to page 10 on "recently added" without being promoted to "popular videos" and has a rating less than ~2.5-3.2 then delete it. Or, if a video has 6 votes and a rating less ~2.5 remove it (videos with bad ratings don't get many votes or views). Or, a system based only on views - if a "recently added" post hits page 5 with less than ~150 views remove the post....etc.

Just some suggestions.
